The Inspiration of Gestalt Psychology to the Visual Design of Video Games

Abstract


As an emerging and flourishing cultural entertainment industry, video games is “The Ninth Artâ€, which is a combination of techniques and arts. It is highly interactive, open and full of visual reality, which make is become a popular entertainment form. However, the design of video games focuses more on technical design, it doesn’t raise the artistry of video games to a new level. Therefore, it cannot meet the aesthetic needs of players, and meanwhile its understanding of their psychology is weak. This thesis is based on Gestalt Psychology, with visual illusion theory as its core, and examines the current cases of games, to find out how to influence users with “Gestalt Force†and “Self-organizing Theoryâ€, giving them direct sensory stimuli and motivating their “Gestalt Force†of Psychological experience and participating into the process of games. Thus, they will have stronger game experience and aesthetic feelings.
